Davidson Hall--Snow Melt System
Columbus State Community College had a difficult problem to address. An
existing, exterior grand stairway that is a major pedestrian traffic link
from the parking garage to the academic buildings had become unsafe during
the winter months.
A previously installed, electrical snowmelt system had failed and was impossible
to repair. W.E. Stilson Consulting Group recommending retrofitting
the stairway and upper plaza with a hydronic, tube system.
This unusual project included the creation of a small, exterior room under
the stairway to house a miniature electric boiler, controls and manifold
system for the snowmelt tubing.
The winter of 2002-2003 proved to be an excellent opportunity to test the
new system with unusually cold weather and high snow accumulations. The
system worked perfectly and provided a safe, maintenance-free walking surface
throughout the winter months.
